The ancient paintings and calligraphy section will specially present the "Book of Filial Piety" in regular script by Huang Daozhou, which is collected by Teijiro Yamamoto, and nearly 100 letters of famous scholars from the Ming and Qing dynasties collected by "Wanxue Book House". The modern and contemporary paintings and calligraphy section is full of famous artists, gathering in Hong Kong. Wu Changshuo, Zhang Daqian, Qi Baishi, Pu Xinyu, Fu Baoshi, Pan Tianshou and other modern masters all have their masterpieces presented. Huang Daozhou (1585-1646)

Regular script copy of The Book of Filial Piety

Album leaf (24 pages in 12-page format) Ink on paper

Recorded in: "Chenghuaitang Calligraphy and Painting Catalogue Volume 4", pages 79-80, written by Yamamoto Teijiro, published by Wenqiutang, 1932 edition.

25.5×15.5 cm

This season will present Huang Daozhou's copy of the "Book of Filial Piety" in regular script from the "Cunchaoan" collection, which was formerly owned by an important collector, Yamamoto Teijiro. This copy was written in the 14th year of the Chongzhen reign. At that time, Huang Daozhou and Jie Xuelong were both sentenced to 80 strokes of the cane and sent to the Western Treasury for offending Yang Sichang. In prison, Huang Daozhou "often wrote the "Book of Filial Piety" to pay for his labor. All the 120 copies of the "Book of Filial Piety" written by hand were taken away by the jailers and nothing was left." The title of this copy is "In the eighth month of the Xinyi year of the Chongzhen reign, Huang Daozhou respectfully writes again." It can be seen that it was written in the prison of the Ministry of Justice. Huang Daozhou was good at regular script. From this copy, we can see that although he followed the style of Zhong and Wang as always, he changed the roundness of Zhong Yao and the elegance of Wang Xizhi, and changed the roundness to squareness and the beauty to clumsiness. Every stroke has the power to cut through iron and is full of spiritual power. This work was formerly owned by Qian Yue of the Qing Dynasty, and was inscribed by Luo Zhenyu. After being brought to the East, it was passed down to Meiji-era Sinologist Yasuo Kuroki and collector Teijiro Yamamoto, and was included in the "Chenghuaitang Calligraphy and Painting Catalog".

Zhang Daqian (1899-1983)

"Rain in the Mountain and Stream"

Created in 1967

Framed ink and color on paper

Exhibition: "Recent Works of Daqian Jushi", Hong Kong, 1967.

Published: "Exhibition of Recent Works by Daqian Jushi", Plate 23, Hong Kong, edited by Zhang Chiliang, 1967 edition.

86×50.5 cm

Zhang Daqian traveled all over the world throughout his life, and his paintings of the beautiful scenery of the Yangtze River and Europe are amazing. This piece was created in 1967 and was exhibited in the "Daqian Layman Recent Works Exhibition" in Hong Kong in the same year. The painting is based on the poetic spirit of the Yuan Dynasty, written on the custom-made ribbed paper of Dafengtang. At that time, the painter was exiled to Bade Garden in Brazil. The foreign life was leisurely, just like the countryside of Bashu, so he was comfortable to paint, and it also created an excellent opportunity for the painter to experiment with ink and color splashing. The mountains in this work are painted with a unique ink and color splashing method. The hazy ink color reveals the continuous height of the peaks, the texture of the rocks and the lush trees below the painting. A few strokes of the village house on the lonely cliff in the distance are quite traditional literati interest. The whole work is like flowing smoke and clouds, refreshing, and the magnificent atmosphere naturally comes from the tip of the pen.

Fu Baoshi (1904-1965)

Autumn Scenery of Jialing River

Written in the Gengzi Year (1960)

Hanging scroll, ink and color on paper

40×28 cm

In September 1960, Fu Baoshi organized the Jiangsu Traditional Chinese Painting Sketching Group to go on a "23,000-mile Long March" sketching tour. The journey lasted three months, and the painters "opened their eyes, expanded their minds, and gained knowledge". The magnificent scenery along the way greatly inspired Fu Baoshi's creative inspiration. During this period, many masterpieces of the mature period emerged, which were wonderful. This "Autumn Colors of Jialing River" was created in the same period. It was fourteen years after Jingangpo, and Fu Baoshi revisited the old place and drew this picture to commemorate it. It was very deliberate. "The brush and ink should follow the times", and the Jialing River in the picture was given new life in the new era and the life experience of the new China. The Jialing River in the painting is vast and beautiful in the mist, and the mountains in the near distance are continuous, surrounded by clouds and mist, and the trees are lush. The vehicles and tourists in the small places are well-organized, which is a model work of the painter's long-distance sketching and depicting the new look of rivers and mountains in the 1960s. This work has been in the collection of a sutra collector for more than 40 years and is on display for the first time this season, making it a real treasure.

Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art

Boutique products are coming soon

March 15-16: Hangzhou

March 26-29: Hong Kong

This spring auction of "Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art" will present more than 100 works, including a special "Poetry without Borders" theme, which uses Asia's unique abstract language and the development of oriental aesthetics as the context to present important representative works from Zao Wou-Ki, Wu Dayu, Chu Yun Gee, Ding Yanyong, Yayoi Kusama, Chiharu Shiota, Shiryu Morita and others.

Celebrate leaps and embrace boundless development

Zao Wou-Ki's fruitful journey and return: "The Ship Entering the Harbor"

Zao Wou-Ki: Ships Entering the Harbor

Painted in 1952

Oil on canvas

47×57 cm

The special topic begins with two treasures of Zao Wou-Ki. One is his important masterpiece, The Arrival of the Ships, which was completed in 1952 and features rich elements and a grand composition. Looking back at the beginning of the year when this work was created, Zao Wou-Ki was invited by Belgian collector Philippe d’Arschot to travel to Antwerp, the second largest port in Europe with a long-term rainy climate. Zao Wou-Ki was deeply fascinated by the fog permeating the port, the interweaving of ships and the dance of cranes, which inspired a strong desire to create. The Arrival of the Ships was born in this unique background.

After it was completed, "The Ship Entering the Port" was treasured by two generations of American collectors for decades, and later passed into the hands of an important private collector in Asia. It is very rare to release it this time. The work incorporates the scene of merchant ships coming and going and the thriving scene into the painting. In terms of color, he deliberately chose the copper green color of bronze ware from the Shang Dynasty and the bold contrast of orange red, which echoes the "red spots and green rust" that bronze ware has developed over time. In the meantime, the black lines like inscriptions on gold and stone outline three layers of space, just like the world of heaven, earth and man divided into three parts in the church murals, showing multiple time sequences. On the first layer, a huge ship full of cargo is seen, sailing to the twin towers of the hometown under the command of the flag bearer; the middle layer is like a resting fortress, with cranes and forklifts moving busily, full of the vitality of industrial civilization and commercial activities, and on the right, a person holding a telescope or a reading meter can be seen looking into the distance, showing a kind of exploration and expectation for the future. On the top floor, three ships are about to meet each other. The different sizes of the ships cleverly show the reference to the distance of space. The orange-red color in the middle is like the rising sun and the gorgeous sunset. The colorful light brings a sense of warmth and hope to this painting, as if it turns the joy of the people returning home from a long journey into reality. The work perfectly shows that after Zao Wou-Ki's long journey to the west, he returned to the east with a harvest and honor, just like the huge ship in the painting. The important aesthetic achievement is very meaningful!

The poet is born with nature, and the breath condenses thousands of atmospheres

Zao Wou-Ki's natural combination 25.11.71

Zao Wou-Ki, 25.11.71

Painted in 1971

Oil on canvas

54×65 cm

Another work presented together is "25.11.71", which recently caused a sensation in Asia. In the "Great Dao Wuji: Zao Wou-Ki Centennial Retrospective Exhibition" held at the Art Museum of the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, the curator specially selected it as one of the five works representing the artist's landmark achievements in different periods from the 129 exhibited oil paintings and used it as one of the exhibition promotional posters, highlighting its importance.

Gazing at this work, one is reminded of Song Huizong's dream of Ru porcelain. In the green, white, light pink, and subtle blue-purple suspension, one is led into a poetic realm. The artist boldly divides the world into upper and lower parts. The lower part is made of strong and vast dark blue and green with different brightness changes, and dynamic black lines are added to forge a vibrant nature, just like the lush green mountains. The surging and rushing black lines in the middle are generated from the center of the earth and expand outward, making people feel a "throbbing sense of life". The black and white are in a fierce confrontation, bursting out with the passionate brilliance like a phoenix rising from the fire, speaking of the pulse of the earth at the beginning of the universe. Above it, a world like a secluded orchid in the valley is presented in contrast. The artist uses multiple layers of gray, blue and white to create an ethereal realm, which is like seeing abstract atmospheric movement, or like the lake reflected by the blue sky after rain, shining with bright purple brilliance, and the wind gently caresses the water surface to cause ripples. Thus, in the composition of 25.11.71, the power and stillness of the composition, the heaviness of oil paint and the erraticness of ink, the surging passion and the ambiguity of holding a lute and half covering the face, Zao Wou-Ki leads us to this world where the moment and eternity coexist, allowing the soul to dwell. Since the work was completed in 1972, it has been exhibited in five important solo exhibitions and retrospectives of Zao Wou-Ki, from Toulouse, France, Lisbon, Porto, Portugal, Beirut, Lebanon, to Hangzhou, undoubtedly witnessing the far-reaching charm of Zao Wou-Ki's art.

During the Beijing tour, Guardian Hong Kong will also present a special book launch and special exhibition titled "Simplicity as Splendor: One Glaze from the Guimet Museum and Zhuyuetang Collections in China from the Fifth to Eighteenth Century". This book was carefully written by Professor Lin Yiqiang, Honorary Research Fellow of the Institute of Chinese Culture of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, published by Wenwu Publishing House, and sponsored by China Guardian (Hong Kong) International Auction Co., Ltd. and Guardian Art Center. Through the fine pieces in the Zhuyuetang collection, it deeply explores and systematically expounds the artistic charm and cultural connotation of monochrome glaze porcelain from the fifth to eighteenth century in China. It can be said to be a classic work that combines academic and artistic qualities.

Mr. Jian Yongzhen, the owner of Zhuyuetang, has collected many rare treasures from past dynasties with his excellent collection vision and profound cultural heritage. Zhuyuetang has a deep relationship with China Guardian. Over the years, they have worked together, using collection as a bond and art as a bridge, and have written a series of good stories in the industry. Following the remarkable achievements of the two "Great Skills in Simple Style - Zhuyuetang Porcelain Collection" special auctions held by China Guardian Hong Kong, this exhibition will once again present the classic heavyweight monochrome glaze porcelain collection of Zhuyuetang, leading the audience through thousands of years to experience the simple charm and gorgeous beauty of Chinese ceramic art.
