Dancing Ostriches from Walt Disney's Fantasia is one of the most iconic works in her career. Created in 1995, the series was inspired by the iconic scene of ostriches performing the Dance of the Hours from Disney's 1940 animated film Fantasia. Through a subversive perspective, Rigg transformed the animal images into a powerful female group portrait, exploring the complex relationship between power, vulnerability, and female identity.

It breaks the previous record of GBP 3,065,000 held by "Dancing Ostrich from Walt Disney's Fantasia" sold at Christie's London on October 14, 2023.

About the Artist

Born in Lisbon, Portugal, the Portuguese-British visual artist studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, University of London. She is known for her storybook-inspired paintings and prints. The iconic image of a short, plump woman in a tutu, absorbed in a performance, is a defining image in her work. Her work encompasses abstraction and figuration, naiveté and realism, classical and cartoon-inspired, and includes etchings, acrylics, drawings, and pastels, reflecting on feminism and drawing on Portuguese folk themes.
