Reconstruction of time and space: from “five-day exhibition” to “sustainable experience”

After more than a decade of accumulation and precipitation, Art Basel Hong Kong is no longer limited to simple art exhibitions and sales, but has reconstructed the time and space logic of cultural consumption with a more grand narrative.Extend the limited exhibition period into a cultural movement that runs throughout the year and radiates throughout the city.Le Siyang said, “Since the first year when art activities resumed normalization, we have been constantly trying to expand the boundaries of art display and dissemination. The duration and area of the Hong Kong Art Basel exhibition are limited. If we want to expand the influence of Asian contemporary art, we need to cooperate in different ways.Bring art projects and art activities beyond the exhibition venue.

This exhibition will exhibit Joseph Beuys's sculptures and Andy Warhol's portraits side by side to pay tribute to the two artists' contributions to 20th century art. Focus on emerging artists and galleries"Art Exploration"Exhibition area,There are 22 galleries participating in this year's exhibition, more than half of which are emerging galleries established less than ten years ago. There are 10 galleries participating in this exhibition for the first time., they are distributed in many countries and regions, showing a richer artistic appearance through works from different cultural backgrounds. For example, Emalin in London will bring the new installation work "Memory Dispute" by German-Vietnamese artist Xiao Chong, which combines minimalist aesthetics, gas tanks and ancient coins to explore the history of French colonial rule in Indochina; LambdaLambdaLambda in Pristina will exhibit the new hand-woven textile works by Croatian artist Hana Miletić to explore the traces of care, loss and repair.

This exhibition"Asian Vision"In addition to focusing on curatorial projects by artists from Asia and the Asia-Pacific region,There is a greater emphasis on presenting works by well-known local Hong Kong artists, a tendency that is particularly evident among the galleries participating in the exhibition for the first time. For example, SC Gallery in Hong Kong exhibited Chow Chun Fai's research project "Interview the Interviewer II", which examines social and political changes from the perspective of Hong Kong; Angela Lee Contemporary Space, also located in Hong Kong, presented the works of Hong Kong local artist Chan Yuk Keung, whose works are scientific explorations of natural elements such as rocks, trees and water, bringing new interpretations to traditional Chinese landscape paintings. The participation of these new galleries not only expands the global narrative of Asia-Pacific art, but also continuously injects new vitality into Art Basel Hong Kong.

The gallery will also“Curating Corner” presents the latest series of works by artist Pei Yanqing. The latest series continues Pei Yanqing's creation of a world with multiple subject-object relationships. The imagination of deep time and subconscious ambiguity creates more lingering lines and full spaces. The brushstrokes here are constantly chasing and difficult to close. The merged images are always changing. Whether it is the face, body, tuber or branches and leaves or even the hidden eyes, the boundaries are transformed into the beginning of things again. This coincides with the scale of Chinese painting's grasp of imagery. The spatial depth that no longer follows the principle of perspective is promoted by the changes in the depth of color and the degree of exposure. The different levels of lines create a readable sense of direction, gradually turning the picture into a tangible consciousness. In these juxtaposed and layered fields, what appears is a wrapped cross-sectional space-time that crosses geographical gullies, time limits, and biological separations. In this dimension, all things rely on each other so closely.

图片

Wade Guyton, Untitled, 2021, Epson inkjet print on linen, 213.4 x 175.3 cm, courtesy the artist and Galerie Santa, Paris

Santa Gallery presents artistsWade Guyton's solo projectThe five paintings on display embody Wade Guyton’s signature themes and images at the heart of his work: the studio floor, a view of Manhattan from the studio window, screenshots from product ads, and, ultimately, a close-up of a bitmap file.

Since the early 2000s, Wade Guyton has been investigating the conditions of digital image production and its effects. His paintings are made by placing folded, pre-coated canvases multiple times into large-scale inkjet printers to print enlarged patterns, texts and photographs. Errors, gaps and drips of ink are part of the composition, and sometimes the artist deliberately seeks out or creates these effects. Guyton intentionally misuses the printer by challenging its technical limitations and using materials that do not meet its specifications. The tension between his will and the capabilities of the machine is at the heart of his work, as is the evolving relationship between people and images.

The gallery will focus onXue RuozheandPei Hejun. Xue Ruozhe uses painting as his main creative technique, exploring the recontextualization and charm of figurative painting in the contemporary media ecology in the cracks between painting and imagery, and painting and its own history. He pushes the psychological density of the picture to the limit with a highly restricted method, and then distorts reality through constant subtraction until the picture reaches a state of suspension and stagnation. Pei Hejun's paintings study the complex relationship between visual elements, especially the interaction between surface and background, color and line. Her abstract and colorful works describe the actions people make when using their mobile phones in layers, such as "swiping" and "tapping", beyond pure emotion or intuition.

BANK's exhibition at Art Basel Hong Kong will serve as a prism between this world and the afterlife, reflecting the body and the spirit.Han DuyiDrawing inspiration from banners in Buddhist temples, commercial advertisements, and the modern financial elite, the textile installation is a mixture of marketing messages and mantras that oscillates between worship and fear, attempting to encapsulate the psychological moment when humans place their faith in artificial intelligence.Lin KeThe “Sky Paintings” by Lin Ke deepened this uncanny dialogue. These wandering digital ghosts, neither completely present nor completely absent, turned the booth into a scene of electronic summoning. At the same time, Lin Ke’s solo exhibition at BANK Shanghai will continue to expand this exploration. Another striking portrait in the group exhibition isKe HaoliThe Duchess of Argyll depicted in the painting reveals the hypocrisy and double standards of the upper class as Britain at that time was spying on and criticizing her romantic life. Her life contrasts with the highly sarcastic slogan on the canvas.

On the other side of the booth are works related to water.Patty ChangHer seminal performance in the 1990s is captured in photographic form in Ice (1999), which captures the artist’s intense interaction with a two-hundred-pound block of ice. Chang’s long-standing exploration of the symbiotic relationship between the female body and global water systems will be presented in her new Met commission, which will be unveiled in March.Zhang YibeiThe sculptures are inspired by marine life and interpret metaphors for survival in the post-pandemic era. Their hard shells and pulsating pores echo the calibrated rhythm of human social distance.

These reflections on existential anxiety andJi YunfeiThe ink elegy with black humor resonated with people. From the perspective of the development of Eastern art, "ink" and "calligraphy and painting" are important forms of expression that carry the thoughts of Laozi and Zhuangzi's Zen Buddhism. Chinese artists grasp the spirit of cultural aesthetics behind the brush and ink, reinterpret traditional texts into contemporary contexts, and engage in dialogue with tradition from unique perspectives. Among them,Zhao Zhao's new creation "Plants" series will be exhibited in the "Curating Corner" section.
