Chinese calligraphy and painting

This spring auction features over 300 works in the Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Department, encompassing several well-documented and richly detailed private collections.

The section on modern and contemporary Chinese paintings and calligraphy brings together collections from several important figures in the arts and culture world. For example, the Wang Jiqian family collection includes works by Wu Guanzhong from a private collection in Singapore, showcasing the master's artistic journey of integrating Chinese and Western styles. Li Xiawen's collection also includes a set of Huang Binhong's flower and calligraphy fan paintings. Huang Binhong is renowned for his landscapes, but his flower paintings possess a unique charm, rendered with the boneless technique to depict abundant blossoms, creating a serene and elegant effect, brimming with literary spirit. Furthermore, the collection of Wu Zengshan, a prominent scholar of the Republic of China era, features Xu Beihong's "Leap Forward," a powerful and vigorous work. The collection of Pan Xiangsheng, a Shanghai Confucian businessman, includes Ren Bonian's "Sending Charcoal in the Snow," featuring inscriptions from various figures, witnessing the flourishing of artistic exchanges in Shanghai at that time.

The ancient calligraphy and painting section is led by Wen Zhengming's "Traveling to Tianping Mountain and Composing Poems in Response" scroll. Created in 1552 (the 31st year of the Jiajing reign), when Wen Zhengming was 83 years old, this scroll recounts his travels in Suzhou with renowned scholars from the Wu region, including Peng Nian, Lu Shidao, and Wang Guxiang. It is an important document documenting the elegant gatherings of Wu literati. Several other exquisite Ming and Qing dynasty calligraphy works will also be presented, such as Wang Duo's "Cursive Script Copy of Wang Xizhi" and Dong Qichang's copy of the "Grand Tutor's Admonition" scroll.

This season's special Buddhist theme, "A Lotus Blossoms in a Single Thought," brings together multiple scrolls of Tang Dynasty Buddhist scriptures. These important carriers of medieval Buddhist culture, with their solemn brushstrokes, are all inscribed and authenticated by the renowned Dunhuang scholar, Mr. Fang Guangchang, and possess immense historical and religious cultural value.

Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art

This spring auction, China Guardian Hong Kong's Department of Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art presents the "Sounds of Motion" section, focusing on representative works by 16 masters of Asian modern and contemporary art, from Wu Dayu, Lin Fengmian, Ding Yanyong, Zao Wou-Ki, Xie Jinglan, Yayoi Kusama, Kazuo Shiraga, and Gu Nawen, to Ding Yi, Chen Ke, and Huang Yuxing. The exhibition showcases their exceptional use of line, color, and movement, and their artistic achievements.

The mountains stand tall and majestic, while the Yellow River flows down from the heavens.

Zhao Wuji's Penglai Realm, where he coexists with heaven and earth

Leading the series is Zao Wou-Ki's important representative work from the 1990s, a work that represents the pinnacle of his skill. "09.04.92-07.06.93" was created when he was already renowned throughout the world, frequently invited to hold major exhibitions in Europe and Asia. The work reflects the artist's expansive and contented state of mind at that time, and has also been exhibited in major retrospective exhibitions at the Château de Chenonceau in France, the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, the Hong Kong Museum of Art, and the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, demonstrating its iconic and representative nature.

Since 1958, Zao Wou-Ki has abandoned concrete imagery in favor of abstract expression. However, in the lower left of this work, we rarely see his detailed depiction of natural mountain shapes. The solid, triangular peaks stand tall and proud, the orange-red hues reminiscent of autumn maple leaves painting the forests ablaze with color, infusing the canvas with a vibrant, burgeoning life force! To the right, a large brushstroke of aquamarine extends downwards in a parabolic arc from the center right, like the Yellow River flowing from the heavens, instantly creating leaping, fluttering waves that converge below to form a deep blue lake. The contrasting elements on the left and right sides—one fiery red, one azure blue; one still as a mountain, the other surging ceaselessly—reveal the Lao-Zhuang philosophy of Yin and Yang. Zao Wou-Ki once said: "Every building in my childhood home had a yard, and even if it was small, it always had a fish pond and a clear spring, just like the house I lived in in Paris. I loved having the sound of flowing water to my ears."The azure blue in this painting, like a clear spring, is an element he cherished throughout his life. The majestic, orange-red mountains are reminiscent of countless times I've climbed high and gazed into the distance, peeking out from the clouds; or perhaps of the distant mountains in paintings I saw during childhood family ancestral rites, when my father would bring out his treasured works by Mi Fu and Zhao Mengfu for us to admire. Furthermore, the painting is filled with a divine golden radiance, seemingly traversing over thirty years from the background, rushing towards us and leading us into this fairyland, akin to Penglai. The work vividly demonstrates the painter's transcendent state of mind at that time, a state of oneness with heaven and earth, and with all things—truly a masterpiece!"

Echoes of Heaven, a masterpiece of Wu Dayu's musical composition

"Rhythm (Untitled 62)" is a rare oil painting by Wu Dayu, a "master among masters" of the 20th century. This work has been exhibited at major solo exhibitions of Wu Dayu at the Taipei History Museum and the Shanghai Art Museum. On the occasion of the artist's 95th birthday, it was selected by the Shanghai Art Museum as a "commemorative first-day cover" representing Wu Dayu's lifelong aesthetic achievements, which shows its significance.

In this work, Wu Dayu abandons complex color palettes, boldly constructing the entire world with refined Prussian blue, ochre yellow, and deep black. In the lower right corner, a robust human figure is presented with a steady yet explosive power. Its posture evokes the poised tension of the ancient Greek sculpture "Discobolus," or the creation of the world by Pangu, guiding the flow of light and color with a single-handed will, showcasing a powerful "movement of momentum." In the upper left, a musical instrument "fusion of East and West" emerges, possessing both the cross-shaped headstock of the Eastern pipa and the curves of the Western cello, forming a "resonant entity." In this work, we seem to "see" sound: the steady, lingering color blocks are the resonance of bass notes, the cascading brushstrokes are the soaring strumming of strings, and the intense collision of forms is a magnificent symphony! It vividly demonstrates his lifelong pursuit of "…".The musicality of paintingBetween the two, bright yellow hues, like lightning streaking across the night sky, leap out with lively dots and lines. The bird swooping downwards in the center further expresses the artist's genuine yearning for freedom. Looking at his entire body of oil paintings, this work is the only one that clearly and concretely depicts musical instruments and human figures, making it exceptionally rare and remarkable.

Hermès: Limited Edition Anemone Purple Swift Leather Ghillies Birkin Bag, 30cm, with Palladium Hardware

The Hermès Ghillies handbag is one of the brand's very few limited-edition creations inspired by footwear, cleverly incorporating the decorative perforation technique of traditional Scottish men's shoes into the design of high-end leather goods. First unveiled between 2011 and 2012, this collection, designed by Jewelry Artistic Director Pierre Hardy, transforms the practical details originally used for breathability in outdoor footwear into exquisite perforated decorations along the edges of the bags—each perforation is precisely handcrafted by artisans, paired with contrasting stitching, seemingly infusing the classic Birkin or Kelly with a lively sense of breath.

Since its inception, Ghillies has always been released in limited seasonal quantities, never becoming a regular product line. Production was primarily concentrated between 2011 and 2016, with only a few dozen pieces of each color and material combination ever made. After production ceased, they became even rarer. The crocodile leather version is particularly exceptional—estimated to be only 20 to 50 pieces of each colorway worldwide, making it a dream item that collectors consider "unattainable."

This exhibition and sale will feature extremely rare crocodile leather versions and a variety of exquisitely colored Ghillies handbags. Collectors are cordially invited to witness this legendary craftsmanship, which is even more precious now that production has ceased.

The essence of "refined living" lies in savoring the beauty of fine wines and teas, appreciating the rich aromas that linger on the lips and fingers; those small, fulfilling moments hidden in every breath and sip constitute the most precious days and nights of life. We cordially invite you to join us for this springtime rendezvous, to savor the rich flavors of time, and to appreciate the beauty of life's moments together.

2014 Guizhou Maotai Special Aged Wine by Jackie Chan

6 bottles/500ml

53% ABV (Soy Sauce Flavor)

In 2011, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Maotai's state ownership, Jackie Chan and Maotai Distillery collaborated to create the "Jackie Chan Special Aged Collector's Edition" liquor. It was officially launched in 2012 and production ceased in 2014.

The outer box of this liquor is predominantly red, adorned with gold dragon embroidery. When unfolded, the box reveals a complete and lifelike image of a dragon soaring amidst auspicious clouds. On both the bottle and the outer box, Jackie Chan's signature in both Chinese and English is printed in the lower right corner of the dragon's head, along with the words "Collector's Edition." The overall packaging incorporates numerous dragon-themed stamp patterns, with dragon elements visible throughout. 1990s Butterfly brand Shoumei peony teapot in original wooden box.

Quantity: 1 box (20 catties as labeled)

Tea Factory: China Tea Fujian Branch

Storage: Dry storage

Note: Original wooden crate, unopened.

In 1950, the Fuzhou branch of the China Tea Company was established, becoming one of the earliest companies in New China to engage in the trade of white tea. During the planned economy era, the factories producing finished white tea were Jianyang Tea Factory, Zhenghe Tea Factory, and Fuding Tea Factory. By the early 1980s, the division of labor among the factories was as follows: Jianyang Tea Factory mainly produced Gongmei and Bai Mudan, Zhenghe Tea Factory mainly produced Bai Mudan, and Fuding Tea Factory mainly produced Yinzhen Baihao, Shoumei, and new-process white tea.

White tea is cooling in nature, and its extracts have a certain inhibitory effect on the growth of some bacteria and microorganisms. During years of storage, the internal components of white tea transform, resulting in a more diverse aroma, a deeper liquor color, a more mellow taste, and a gradual shift in its nature from cooling to warming. This gives it considerable drinking and collectible value. Butterfly brand export aged white tea is particularly popular among tea connoisseurs, and is extremely difficult to find even in large quantities.
