[2024 Autumn Auction] Yongle Contemporary Art Special Sale from December 7 to 9, three major sections focus on academic and market hot spots
The combing of academic context has always been a part of Yongle Auction's modern and contemporary art section. This season, Yongle's 2024 Autumn Auction's modern and contemporary art section has multiple clues and rich academic context.
In the "Lansheng Night Market", there are works that are linked by the evolution of "portraits" in the era, as well as works that recreate and reshape the "landscape" theme at different stages. At the same time, there are also top works of Asian art.
Yongle’s main “New Painting” section has launched representative works of many representative artists born in the 1970s and 1980s at key/turning points in their careers, as well as masterpieces by representative artists of the “post-85 new generation”. Its market performance is worth looking forward to.
The New Wave section features more outstanding masterpieces by artists born between 1985 and 1990, which have great collection potential and their performance at auction is worth looking forward to.
The preview of this season's Yongle 2024 Autumn Auction will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel Beijing from December 7th to 8th, and the contemporary art section will be held on December 9th.
1. Evolution of character portraits in different eras
Taking "figure" and "portrait" paintings as clues, this season Yongle not only presents Wu Guanzhong's rare "nude" figure paintings, but also brings classic figure-themed creations by Zhang Xiaogang, Zhang Enli, Liu Xiaohui and others.
"spring"
Created in 1995
39.5×49.5cm
Oil on canvas
Wu Guanzhong: Fountain
In Wu Guanzhong's creation, the human body is a very important subject. In his early years, he created a large number of "human body" works. After returning to China in 1950, he was influenced and criticized by the revolutionary realist creation mode at that time. The original form of figure painting was impacted. At the same time, he was unwilling to paint according to a fixed pattern. Wu Guanzhong has since alienated himself from figure painting and switched to landscape painting. This alienation lasted for forty years. In the 1990s, Mr. Wu Guanzhong began to pick up "figure" painting again. The "figure painting" creation at this time can be regarded as the culmination of his performance.
Although Wu Guanzhong's works are produced in large quantities, most of his masterpieces are kept in art galleries or in the hands of important private collectors. They are not easily put up for auction. Among them, his "human body" works are even more rare.
This season's Yongle Autumn Auction features Wu Guanzhong's "body" painting "Spring", created in 1995. In the painting, a plump female body lies beside a "mountain spring". Wu Guanzhong does not simply focus on the realistic reproduction of the figure, but adds more expressive and abstract elements. In addition, with more than 40 years of experience in depicting "famous mountains and rivers", he combines the landscape intention with the human body modeling, creating a unique modeling concept and formal beauty.
Fountain was auctioned in Hong Kong in 2013, with an estimated price of HK$4-6 million, and was eventually sold for HK$7.015 million, far exceeding the highest estimate. It is now on the market again after 11 years, and its performance at the auction is worth looking forward to.
Amnesia and Memory No.8
Created in 2007
110.5×130.5cm
Oil on canvas
Zhang Xiaogang: Amnesia and Memory No.8
"Portraits" are the main subject of Zhang Xiaogang's creation. From the "Bloodline-Big Family" series in the 1990s to the "Amnesia and Memory" series, the artist depicts a "collective portrait" of family, individual, era, and society through the creation of characters.
The "Amnesia and Memory" series is a new series developed by Zhang Xiaogang after the "Bloodline-Big Family" series. Entering the millennium, facing the great changes in society, Zhang Xiaogang's creation shifted from exploring the most representative "family bloodline" in the social structure to depicting "personal psychology". In the works of this period, the expressionless and homogenized faces that appear repeatedly constitute a unified social group portrait, showing a certain contradictory relationship between collective unconsciousness and personal psychology.
Zhang Xiaogang's "Amnesia and Memory No. 8" was created in 2007. It depicts a typical male figure in the series. However, unlike the earlier works in the series, the figure no longer focuses on the eyes, but appears with eyes closed. The expression of the figure conveys a "psychological" emotion: through this, the artist expresses a more introspective, absurd, daydreamy perception and experience.
This portrait painting is quite large in size. In 2018, it was sold for HK$1.875 million at the Hong Kong Autumn Auction. This time it was auctioned in the mainland, and the price was quite attractive.
"Smoking Man"
Created in 1997
170×150cm
Oil on canvas
Zhang Enli "Smoking Man"
From 1990 to 2000, Zhang Enli's paintings were mainly about people. During this period, the characters he depicted were friends, colleagues, a woman walking on the street, people buying vegetables in the market, etc. He showed the living conditions of urban people with the posture of an observer and scrutinizer, and through the detached expressionist narrative tone.
Among the different series of works created by Zhang Enli so far, the early "Urban Figures" series has attracted more attention from the market. The top five works at auction are all from this period. This season's Yongle "Smoking Man" was created in 1997 and is one of the representative works of the early "Figures" series. In the autumn auction of 2021, "Smoker", created in the same year, with the same size and the same subject matter, was sold for 5.865 million yuan. It is currently the fifth highest price for Zhang Enli's auction. The performance of this work this season is worth looking forward to.
Untitled: The Shape of Intervention
Created between 2015 and 2017
200×300cm
Oil on canvas
Liu Xiaohui: Untitled - The Shape of Intervention
Liu Xiaohui is a post-70s artist who has attracted much attention in the art market in recent years. Currently, the auction record for artist Liu Xiaohui was created by Yongle Auction in the autumn auction of 2023.
Untitled: Shape of Intervention was created between 2015 and 2017, and was exhibited at ShanghART Gallery’s solo exhibition “Two Actions” in 2018. In this exhibition, Liu Xiaohui broke the well-known personal label of “back view” in his works, and depicted a new theme with two symmetrical figures in motion.
In this new theme, the actions of people in front of the mirror that appear to be undressing or dressing attempt to reveal a "truth" - the same action may have different, or even completely opposite, meanings in different dimensions.
From "Back View" in the previous stage to "Two Actions" in the new stage, Liu Xiaohui has been constantly making breakthroughs and exploring new possibilities in his personal creation.
This batch of works also represents Liu Xiaohui's current success in the market.
2. “Reconstruction and Reshaping” of Abstract Landscape
In the history of art, the understanding and cognition of "landscape" has lasted for thousands of years. At the intersection of different cultures of the East and the West, from integration to breaking, and then to innovation, how Chinese artists "recreate and reshape" the "abstract landscape" in their hearts in different eras is still a proposition that generations of artists continue to strive for.
In this autumn auction, Yongle presents the understanding of "abstract landscape" by artists from different eras such as Zao Wou-Ki, Zhou Chunya, Liu Wei, Zeng Fanzhi, and brings classic masterpieces representing these artists.
Untitled

38×46.2cm

Zao Wou-Ki: Untitled
Zao Wou-Ki went to France to study in 1948. He integrated traditional Chinese painting techniques and cultural core with Western painting styles, and discovered traditional Chinese abstract art forms in the complex world of Western abstract art.
In 1951, Zao Wou-Ki met Paul Klee, who had a significant influence on his artistic creation. This abstract landscape "Untitled" created in 1952 belongs to Zao Wou-Ki's early works and is a classic work of his "Klee period" in his exploration of abstraction.
Although the painting is not large in size, it is just right for the artist to create tension in the painting. It creates an impressive rhythm and dynamics, interweaving a rich visual effect. Since then, Chinese oracle bone inscriptions, bronze inscriptions, primitive murals, symbolization and other elements have gradually appeared in Zao Wou-Ki's works.
This work was sold for 4.6535 million yuan in 2021. As a classic representative work of Zao Wou-Ki's early years, it deserves attention.
Peach Blossom Spring in Jiangnan

Oil on canvas
Zhou Chunya: Peach Blossom Spring in Jiangnan
Unlike many painters of his time, Zhou Chunya's artistic creation has never focused on grand historical narratives or social themes, but has always been focused on a deep insight into individual experience and human desires. From the "Mountain Rocks" and "Green Dog" series in the 1990s to the "Peach Blossom" series after the millennium, the artist has gradually constructed a unique personal visual spectrum in his creations with surreal scenes, unnatural colors and thick and accumulated brushstrokes.
"Jiangnan Peach Blossom Spring" is Zhou Chunya's masterpiece created in 2007. Compared with the previous peach blossom series, the peach blossoms in this work appear more mature and restrained against the clear sky. The artist uses the image of "peach blossom" to create a fantasy world like a paradise, and in the visual and psychological context filled with boundless spring colors, he finds the most idealized artistic form for emotion and color, love and desire.
"landscape"
Created in 2014
200×200cm
Oil on canvas
Liu Wei: Landscape
In 1998, Liu Wei chose to break away from the "cynical realism" narrative images that made him famous, and turned to landscape painting, climbing to the peak of art again. Since then, "landscape painting" has been an important theme of Liu Wei's artistic creation. On the one hand, his "landscape" works are inspired by Gerhard Richter, repeatedly dry brushing the picture to obtain a blurred smudge effect, and on the other hand, they integrate the brushstrokes and ink colors of traditional Chinese painting "mountains and rocks", forming a wild and unrestrained charm. Producing unique works that "learn from nature outside and get the source of the heart inside".
The "Landscape" on auction this time is a large-scale work, created in 2014. It is the most recent work in Liu Wei's "Landscape" series that has been auctioned so far. The work has participated in the large-scale group exhibition "Art History 40×40" at Powerlong Art Museum.

Zeng Fanzhi: Untitled
Zeng Fanzhi's "Untitled" belongs to his "random brush" series. It originated from his exploration of the "abstract landscape" series that began around 2000. The "random brush" creation is Zeng Fanzhi's re-exploration of painting language. He gained inspiration about lines from the experience that his left hand could not accurately control the brush. A brand-new "abstract landscape" that expresses nature and consciousness with pure lines and colors grows out of the canvas. The strong contrast, the messy and intertwined lines, and the graceful movements make the work grow a certain oriental color.
The "Untitled" work being auctioned this time was created in 2016. Currently, the "Random Brushstrokes" series of works from this period rarely appear in the auction market. It is a rare masterpiece.
Outside the Window
Painted in 1992
45×45cm
Oil on canvas
Liu Ye, Outside the Window
The "Berlin Period" is a very critical stage in Liu Ye's artistic career. The expressionist landscape works of this period are between realism and surrealism. They not only inherit the colors and mysterious sense of space of Western modernist masters such as Mondrian and Magritte, but also incorporate his own "life experience" from the East.
During the entire "Berlin Period", Liu Ye painted only more than 20 works, but it was this groundbreaking series that laid the foundation for his highly respected personal style in the future and was recognized by the academic community as the true starting point of his painting journey. During this period, "Outside the Window", created in 1992, was the only landscape-themed work. It was also the first work to use the important painting symbol "airplane", so it has a very special significance in the study of the painter's early creative genealogy.
At present, his second most expensive work at auction, "Golden Avenue", is the last masterpiece of his "Berlin period". In the spring auction of 2023, another rare masterpiece of the "Berlin period", "Baroque", was sold at Yongle for 23 million yuan. This shows the influence and appeal of the works of this period in the market.
"Outside the Window", created in 1992 and auctioned at Yongle this time, is an important work of Liu Ye during his "Berlin period". It is not only an extremely rare early landscape painting, but also a work that connects the past and the future, foreshadowing his minimalism and abstract style after the millennium.

Ding Yi, Ten Signs 2012-12
Ding Yi's "Ten Indications" series, which he started to create in the late 1980s, has become a unique "symbol" in Chinese contemporary art. Among the countless "Ten Indications" series he created in his career, the "Ten Indications" series that he started in 2012 is the work of Ding Yi's return to black and white from the fluorescent series, and also his perception of the urbanization process. In an interview, Ding Yi once explained, "The fluorescent series is to see the city as close as possible, and the black and white series is to push the city further and further away." Fluorescent color is a celebration of urbanization, while black and white is an examination and self-reflection of the urbanization model.

Zhang Enli: Elasticity (I)
In 2013, Zhang Enli created the "Elasticity" series of works. At this time, the artist's depiction of lines has become more mature, and presents a sense of relaxation that is easy to use. He regards "lines" as "portraits" and creates them away from specific images. This marks that the artist's creation has entered a new stage.
In the autumn auction of 2023, the work "Elasticity (IV)" created in the same year was estimated at 2.5 million to 3.5 million yuan, and was finally sold for 4.83 million yuan, far exceeding the highest estimate. Although the work auctioned this time is slightly smaller in size, it is the first work in the series. It is also worthy of attention.

Yayoi Kusama: Revelation from Heaven
In the rich and varied creative context of Yayoi Kusama, "Revelation from Heaven" is a work that can be interpreted from multiple dimensions. The dense mesh in the painting is a style that the artist began to develop as early as 1960, and has now developed into a more mature and confident style. Created in 2004, "Revelation from Heaven" combines all of Kusama's basic creative elements: continuous repetition, inverted and deformed patterns, accumulation of geometric shapes and dots, which is dazzling in the simple and complex elements. For the viewer, it is a confusing and therapeutic vision.

Izumi Kato is known for his signature primitive “human” works. He uses his hands instead of pens to draw, blending human figures that resemble embryos or elves with earth, wood, and nature. Through Kato’s creations, he blends many elements such as nature, gods, and innocence.
1. 70s-80s: A collection of representative works during the turning point/critical period of career

The works of artists at key turning points in their careers have performed strongly in the market, and key representative works often continue to set new highs.
This season, Yongle’s “New Painting” section sorts out the representative works of many representative artists born in the 1970s and 1980s during the key periods of their careers, which should not be missed.

Song Kun: The Pure World of Animism - Tide
Song Kun is one of the few artists in the field of contemporary Chinese figurative painting who can be said to have established his own unique painting language.
In the system constructed by Song Kun like a creator, she created a "cyborg body" with mixed identity and shape to emphasize the virtuality and tension contained in biological existence, and expounded the complex relationship between nature and popular culture under the framework of animism. The bodies depicted by Song Kun are attached with a materiality that transcends any conceptualization. The process of flesh and blood formation of these bodies with a sense of illusion is more like a transformation and change of cultural life.
