Description Of scrollwork and foliate design set with square-cut green tourmalines and square-, circular-cut and pear-shaped pink tourmalines, accented by cushion-shaped diamonds, length approximately 390mm, maker's mark, case stamped C&A Giuliano.

Condition Report Signed C&AG. Enamel in fairly good condition with some minor loss, typical of age. Pink tourmalines display a richly saturated to medium deep pink colour, green tourmalines are a deep green, both with some surface reaching inclusions and wear to facet edges. Overall in good condition. Gross weight approximately 35.5 grams. Case stamped C&A Giuliano.

Provenance Ruth Haslam, sister of Ralph Alexander McEwen Haslam (1888 - 1926), a patron of theatrical enterprises.

Catalogue note The beginnings of Carlo Guiliano's career are thought to have been founded in his training under Castellani in Rome, producing jewels of archeological revival style. Giuliano moved over to London in about 1860 to establish his own firm creating pieces for various jewellers who retailed them bearing the Giuliano marks. Having great success in this business model he was able to open his own shop in 1874 where his two sons Carlo and Arthur continued the family business after his death.

Early Giuliano jewels embody design elements from classical antiquity and the neo-renaissance, his sons continued with this style but introduced a more colouful palette and taste for naturalism, as we can see here.

Despite not having any Royal warrants, but testament to the firms craftsmanship, it is thought that a mourning jewel was produced for Queen Victoria.
