Jia Wei KK: Constructing a philosophical narrative of "flower-like mountains and seas" in the field of contemporary art
In the diverse landscape of contemporary art, Jia Wei KK has built his own creative system with a highly recognizable artistic language. This artist, who draws nourishment from commercial aesthetics practice, fuses life experience, natural philosophy and philosophical speculation into a visual map of colors, lines and symbols, opening up a unique artistic path in the cultural latitude and longitude of tradition and modernity, East and West.
"Like flowers in the wild" is the dynamic gene that runs through Jia Wei's artistic life. From the powerful narrative of the symbiosis of dragons and horses in the series "Like Flowers on Horses" at the 2025 Beijing Contemporary Art Fair, to the reconstruction of totems such as dancing dragons and auspicious elephants in the new work "Like Flowers in Mountains and Seas", Jia Wei uses the artistic concept of "original life, eternal life, and multi-life" as the core, and builds a visual bridge for the dialogue between ancient mythical beasts and contemporary souls in the mythological mist of "Classic of Mountains and Seas".
His iconic “Ruhua” image – with X-shaped eyebrows as the identity mark and a face without ears, nose or mouth to construct a pure visual symbol – not only carries the spiritual trajectory of the artist’s self-healing, breakthrough and rebirth, but also invites the audience to complete their inner reflection in visual resonance with an open semantic space, forming a two-way dialogue mechanism between the creator and the recipient.
2025 Beijing Contemporary Art Fair: Site Construction of "Like Flowers in the Wild, Dragon and Horse Spirit"
During the 2025 Beijing Contemporary Art Fair, Jia Wei KK's solo exhibition "Like Flowers in the Wild·Dragon and Horse Spirit" presented at booth D23 became the focus of the art scene. In this exhibition, not only the "Like Flowers on Horses" series created in 2024-2025 was displayed, but also new works such as "Like Flowers Dancing Dragon·Four" and "Like Flowers in Dreams·Starry Sky" from the "Like Flowers in the Mountains and Seas" series were released, realizing the spiritual context of extending the "free growth" symbolized by "Like Flowers in the Wild" to "Return to the True Self". The exhibition uses easel painting as the core carrier, attracting many institutional collectors and contemporary art curators to discuss on-site. Artist/actor Huang Bo, Beijing Contemporary Art Fair organizer/actor Zhu Zhu and other celebrity friends crossed the border to explore the exhibition, forming a dual resonance of academic circles and mass communication.
The visual translation and life metaphor of “Dragon Horse Spirit”
The theme of "Dragon-Horse Spirit" uses horses as a medium to explore the philosophy of power, freedom and vitality. In the "Flower on Horse" series, the symbiotic image of horses and "Flowers" becomes the core visual symbol: the horse's vigorous body and the "Flowers"' agile form complement each other, constructing a deep connection narrative between man and nature. This series not only echoes the artist's future imagination of "symbiosis of carbon-based and silicon-based life", but also conveys the vigorous power of life with visual tension.
This surreal fusion technique has aroused cross-border resonance. When Huang Bo visited the exhibition, he exclaimed: "The power of the horse and the abstract form of 'Ruhua' produced a wonderful chemical reaction on the canvas."
Zhu Zhu praised the artistic conception of the "Flowers in Dreams" series: "These paintings are like visual poetry, with the blank spaces between colors and lines giving people unlimited room for imagination."
The visual narrative innovation of the new series "Flower-like Mountains and Seas"
The creative system of "Like Flowers, Mountains and Seas" is rooted in the core of the idea of "the beauty of opposition and coexistence" in Eastern philosophy. In the ancient mythology, each god and beast in the Classic of Mountains and Seas carries the collective memory of human evolution and contains the true state of individual life, just like the innocent heart symbolized by the image of "Like Flowers". "Like Flowers" is the artist's self-spiritual projection, and "Mountains and Seas" symbolizes the primitive power that grows freely in the "wild" state. The two are reconstructed through the language of contemporary art to form a symbiotic narrative structure of "super power" and "innocent heart".
Jia Wei's "Flower-like Dragon Dance IV" is a work with great visual impact and artistic appeal. The use of colors is bold and full of tension. The bright colors of red, yellow, blue, white and so on interweave and collide with each other, forming a strong visual stimulation. The splashing and smearing of colors create a lively, warm and energetic atmosphere, just like the gorgeous fireworks in a festival celebration, which instantly catches the viewer's attention.
The work does not follow the traditional realistic expression method, but is composed of abstract lines. Abandoning realistic techniques, on a large canvas, the dragon's body is transformed into a flowing curve, winding and circling in the picture, intertwining with the flexible form of "Ruhua", and the superposition of multiple layers of acrylic paint creates a visual effect of interweaving time and space. The dragon's shape seems to be dancing and moving freely, and the smoothness of the lines echoes the fluidity of the colors, making the picture full of rhythm and rhythm.
Using the techniques of abstract expressionism, through the splashing, dripping and smearing of paint, the colors and brushstrokes become the carriers of emotions and images. The lightness and heaviness of the brushstrokes and the thickness of the paint all convey the passion and power of the artist when creating, giving the work an improvisational and natural beauty.
This form of expression breaks away from the constraints of real objects and transforms the traditional folk image of dragon dance into a modern one. It not only has the spiritual core of traditional culture, but also fits the aesthetic context of contemporary art. The artist uses the image of dragon dance to metaphorically represent the dynamic balance between the collective and the individual in life: the majestic dragon shape symbolizes the cohesion of the group, and the faceless image of "like a flower" represents the true state of the individual, which together conveys the philosophical thinking of the free growth of life.
Jia Wei uses the contrast of warm and cold colors and the transformation of positive and negative shapes in the composition to make the collective protective power of the "auspicious elephant" and the individual innocent heart of the "flower-like" form a visual complement, vividly interpreting the creative concept of "every unique soul has its own life narrative" in "Flower-like Mountains and Seas". In this series, Jia Wei innovatively interprets the image of the elephant from a unique artistic perspective. Elephants are often given auspicious meanings and carry the accumulation of civilization. He combines dreamy colors and surreal compositions to convey warm and beautiful emotions and expectations for a better life.
In the work "Like a Flower in a Dream·Starry Sky", the combination of the elephant with big blue eyes and the red "Like a Flower" on the top of the elephant's trunk is full of imagination - the pure and beautiful heart (like a flower) and the strong and reliable power (lucky elephant) are interdependent. The elephant in the picture is presented in a soft form, conveying the image of gentle protection; the heart-shaped head and sideways posture of "Like a Flower", when standing on the top of the elephant's trunk, its composition directly inherits the auspicious paradigm of "elephant carrying a treasure bottle" in traditional New Year paintings (such as Tianjin Yangliuqing New Year paintings "All Things Renewed"). However, Jia Wei broke the limitations of secular life scenes with a surreal perspective, transforming the folk imagination of "flowers on the elephant's back" into a metaphor on the spiritual level, making "Like a Flower" a connection point between the magnificent imagination of "Classic of Mountains and Seas" and the contemporary soul appeal.
The deep blue-purple background with flashing spots creates a mysterious and vast atmosphere like the universe, which not only symbolizes the unknown and vast world, but also implies the spiritual universe deep in people's hearts. The blue elephant in the main body echoes the background color. In the large-scale picture of 320cm×210cm, the audience can immerse themselves in the fantasy art world created by it.
