On the evening of May 31, the "72 Changes · 2025 China Academy of Art Graduation Season" opened brilliantly! The theme performance and fashion show were combined to form a flowing poetic scene in the rain. In order to provide more visiting time and create a better graduation season viewing experience, the school has decided to extend the exhibition period and viewing time of some exhibition areas of the 2025 China Academy of Art Graduation Season.

The exhibition period of Liangzhu Campus, Zhejiang Art Museum and Quan Shanshi Art Center has been extended to June 20, 2025.

At this moment, when the evening breeze of June blows away the poetic lines of the earth, we gather in the art palace of China Academy of Art to witness the grand opening of the 2025 graduation season. Here, on behalf of the Propaganda Department of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, I would like to express my warm congratulations to all the graduates who are about to embark on a new journey of art! I would like to pay high tribute to the teachers who have devoted themselves to educating people! I would also like to express my heartfelt thanks to friends from all walks of life who have long cared about and supported the development of Zhejiang's cultural and artistic education!
Every mountain and river is poetic, every hill and valley is elegant. When Mr. Cai Yuanpei, an educator of his generation, chose the West Lake in Hangzhou as the site to establish the National Academy of Arts in 1928, a lake and a school were linked to each other by the creation of beauty, becoming a cradle of art and a cultural landmark that complement and grow together. The spark of art stretches all the way from the foot of Gushan Mountain, using pen and ink as a boat, carrying the genes of China's 5,000-year-old civilization to the ocean of modern art.
The vast mountains and rivers are all painted, and the wonderful brushwork is in the dream. Looking back at the 97 years of the Academy of Fine Arts, there have always been two clear academic threads overlapping: "integration of Chinese and Western" represented by the first president, Mr. Lin Fengmian, and "innovation from tradition" represented by Mr. Pan Tianshou. They are inclusive and jointly interpret the eternal propositions about beauty, creation, and inheritance. They used academics as a public tool, sharpened each other, used art as a boat, and were determined to innovate. Tonight, you will take over this eternal light and redraw the coordinates of art under the starry sky of the digital age.
The development of art is inseparable from innovation, but the "change" tempered in the long river of art is not a departure from tradition, but a creative transformation that activates the genes of civilization with a pioneering attitude. Just as Mr. Wang Shu engraved a metaphor on the tile wall: every old brick tells of a new life. In my opinion, the China Academy of Art has never been a "production factory of standard answers", but a "magic academy" in the art world. This year, the theme of the China Academy of Art graduation season is "Seventy-two Changes". In these works full of youthful vigor, I see your in-depth thinking on the development proposition of "Chinese-style modernization", and a new artistic interpretation of the creative transformation and innovative development of excellent traditional culture.
Youth has never been just a footnote of the times, but also a pen that rewrites history. This year marks the 20th anniversary of General Secretary Xi Jinping's deployment and implementation of the "Eight Projects" for cultural construction during his work in Zhejiang. It is also an important moment for the whole province to continue to deepen the "Eight Projects" to better shoulder the cultural mission of the new era and accelerate the construction of a high-level cultural power province. I would like to take this opportunity to share three expectations with you:
A pure heart. Although art itself transcends national boundaries, as creators and disseminators of art, artists should always maintain a sense of national boundaries. You who are graduating today have experienced the long three-year pandemic here together, witnessed the 95th anniversary of the Academy of Fine Arts together, and waited for the opening of the Liangzhu campus together. The Academy of Fine Arts has accompanied you in your growth here, and you have also witnessed the development of the Academy of Fine Arts. I wish you to pursue your dreams and live up to your youth in the years after graduation. Now, standing in the field of harvest, I would like to extend my warm congratulations to the hard-working farmers and to the teachers and classmates in the graduating season.
The theme of this year's graduation season is "Seventy-two Changes". The Book of Songs says: Although Zhou is an old country, its mission is to innovate. The cultural mission of our nation is to innovate. The destiny of innovation of an ancient civilization, this combination of inheritance and innovation, is an important gene flowing in our blood. We are the people of destiny in this sense.
Su Shi said in his famous poem "Preface to the Red Cliff": "Between heaven and earth, everything has its owner. ... Only the breeze of the river and the mountain, the bright moon in the mountains, can be heard as sound, and seen as color. There is no restriction on taking them, and they are inexhaustible. This is the endless treasure of the Creator." All things in the world are constant and changeable. The Yangtze River flows endlessly, but it never goes away! The bright moon in the sky is always growing and declining, but it never disappears. From the perspective of change, the world cannot be a moment; from the perspective of immutability, everything and myself are endless. Su Shi's words fully explain the key to constant and change.
These 72 changes are not only about change, but also about constancy. "The breeze and the bright moon are priceless, and the nearby water and distant mountains are all full of affection." Behind the endless changes in artistic creation, there is the endless treasure of all things and the existence of the origin of human heart. The existence of human heart is the natural way for life to be realized, and the vigorous vitality of nature provides infinite variables for the experience of life. How to realize the origin of life is the core proposition of existentialism and also the constant proposition of the methodology of change.
This year's 72 changes have several important characteristics. The first is the abundant perception of youth. The so-called perception is the original power of the human heart and its outward application, which must fall into a specific interactive scenario. Youth is such a unique and abundant scenario. The perception of youth mobilizes the introspective perception of youth life, and through the synaesthesia of eyes and body, it opens up a lively perceptual world where the heart and matter are integrated as one, so as to realize the original and romantic interest of youth life. Throughout the graduation season, whether it is campus or public cultural venues, there is a sea of youth everywhere, full of the vitality and vigor of youth "starting with one thought". In the paintings of youth life, there is often a unique allegorical imagination of youth life. The model installation in cross-media art, the unique mirror space, conveys the unique revelation of contemporary life. The life care of the School of Innovation and Design, the field investigation and archives of the School of Visual Communication, all let us feel the life temperature of the young generation. The diversity of youth ecology flourishes here, presenting a symbiotic evolution of culture and society, history and the present.
The second characteristic is the gradually broadening vision of life. The life of the Academy of Fine Arts is divided into two parts: the field and the study. The field is our personal experience, and the study is the extension of life. In this exhibition, many students' creations are not one piece, but a group. An illustration of youth, a section of life's idle thoughts. They return to their hometowns and record the breath of their hometowns affectionately; they use their imagination to build an artificial Asia; they sort out historical events of a century and carry out magnificent and detailed thinking on the breadth of the century's existence. Creation tends to big life, design tends to new industries, and the life under their feet is getting wider and wider.
The third characteristic is the vivid professional characteristics and poetic expression. The graduation exhibition is different from general exhibitions. It should not only reflect the creation of youth, but also show the current status of professional development under the big visual framework. Here, each art category should maintain and promote the charm of each painting and art variety and the characteristics of the country. Chinese painting should maintain and adhere to the taste of brush and ink, oil painting should have the taste of oil, printmaking should have the taste of print, and sculpture should have the taste of plastic. The seventy-two changes are to infinitely maintain and develop the original state of life to meet the different challenges of the times. In order to achieve this, while adhering to the discipline and professional layout, the country always emphasizes the spirit of philosophers and craftsmen and the poetic spirit of lakes and mountains. Students are often immersed in these spirits. In various professional directions and practical training, they continue to experience the charm of the profession, and firmly hold the root of the "image", which is the place where it is presented to temper life and temper perception. On the one hand, to establish its "sincerity", not only to maintain respect, but also to unfold the goodness of life and actively advance, so that the interest in creation can grasp the height of the original heart. On the other hand, we should hold on to its "sharpness" and keep the original aspiration of youth to show critical sharpness to the vulgarity and staleness of life, and then realize creative and imaginative transformation of the endless treasures of life.
It is said that the 72 transformations of Sun Wukong are the magic skills taught to him by Bodhi Patriarch, and their essence is the 72 transformations of the Earthly Demons. The so-called "72" symbolizes "many" and "infinity" in traditional culture, which further implies the infinity of the ability to change. Create contemporary art and shape a new world art landscape

First of all, on behalf of the school, I welcome everyone to attend the opening ceremony of the graduation exhibition despite the rain! The summer rain is even more poetic. Please allow me to propose that we give the warmest applause to all the students who participated in the graduation exhibition and express our warmest congratulations! We also pay the highest respects to the teachers and parents who have worked hard to cultivate you! Just now, Minister Fan expressed his earnest hope and Dean Xu explained the characteristics of this year's graduation exhibition, which will continue to inspire all graduates.
At this moment, we are at the Xiangshan campus, which was personally planned and built by General Secretary Xi Jinping when he was working in Zhejiang. He earnestly asked the China Academy of Art to speed up the construction of "becoming a world-class art academy that embodies the highest level of research and teaching in Chinese culture and art." This university landscape has built a "humanistic landscape and spiritual home" for generations of students.
On May 21, 1924, 100 years ago, the largest overseas exhibition in China's history, the "Exhibition of Ancient and Modern Chinese Art", was held in Strasbourg, France. This was founded by Chinese students in France, represented by Mr. Lin Fengmian, whose average age was only 23 or 24 years old. In the invitation to submissions for the exhibition, they mentioned that "Chinese ancient art is in urgent need of being sorted out, the art ideas of the East and the West are in urgent need of being reconciled and studied, and China's future new art is in urgent need of being created." When the National Academy of Arts was founded in 1928, it took "introducing Western art, sorting out Chinese art, reconciling Eastern and Western art, and creating contemporary art" as its academic proposition, and "cultivating specialized art talents, advocating art movements, and promoting social aesthetic education" as its school purpose. This academic tradition has continued to this day. In the spring of 1925, the works of the founders of the National Academy of Fine Arts were exhibited in the Chinese Pavilion of the "Paris International Exhibition of Decorative Arts and Modern Industry", which became a cultural declaration that inspired the Chinese people in that era. In a sense, these two exhibitions can be said to be the graduation exhibitions of Chinese art students studying in France.
97 years ago on April 9, 1928, Mr. Cai Yuanpei raised an important question in his speech at the opening ceremony of the National Academy of Arts: "Why did we establish the National Academy of Arts during the Northern Expedition?" "We want to cultivate creative people, students with creative talent. Ten thousand is not too many, and one is not too few." To date, the National Academy of Arts has trained nearly 65,000 creators.
In the past few years, the theme of Gome's graduation season has been closely related to people's lives and creations. In 2020's "Living Together", we look forward to the "endless distance"; in 2021's "Present History", we explore the potential of the "present"; in 2022's "Life Force", we call for "upward and forward life"; in 2023's "Brain Garden", we look for "endless creativity"; in 2024's "World Tree", we feel the "origin of art".
In recent years, GOME has advocated "drinking water from the source and walking with greatness", and held a series of major exhibition clusters that "melt the past and the present, and integrate the East and the West", and moved forward with all graduates, that is, the practice of "the creative transformation and innovative development of China's excellent traditional culture" in various art fields - the "Song Yun Jin Hui" art special exhibition, focusing on the practice of "two creations" of China's excellent traditional culture in the field of Chinese calligraphy and painting, and realizing the first public exhibition of the four masters of the Southern Song Dynasty "Liu, Li, Ma, Xia" in Hangzhou. "The Great Way is Infinite - Zao Wou-Ki Centennial Retrospective Special Exhibition" focuses on the practice of "two creations" of China's excellent traditional culture in the field of oil painting, answering the question "Why did Zao Wou-Ki become Zao Wou-Ki?" The 130-year-old Venice Biennale, for the first time, went out of Italy to cooperate with international academic institutions, and jointly planned and held the "Road to Perfection - Hangzhou, Marco Polo's Paradise City" exhibition with our school, focusing on the practice of "two creations" of China's excellent traditional culture in the field of contemporary art by GOME artists. Among them, the youngest participating artist is a 22-year-old undergraduate graduate of our school, and the exhibition is her graduation work. "Black God Forging - Black Myth: Wukong Art Exhibition" focuses on the practice of the "two creations" of China's excellent traditional culture in the field of animation and games, and asks how "Black Myth: Wukong" was created?
Today is the traditional Chinese festival - Dragon Boat Festival. The theme of this year's graduation exhibition - "72 Changes" comes from the "72 Phenology" in Chinese traditional culture. "72 Changes" is infinite due to changes, but the essence remains unchanged. This is the Chinese worldview and methodology. In the Chinese oracle bone script, the "art" of art is a half-kneeling person planting seedlings, full of respect for the local area and awe and piety for art. Looking back over the past century, from Lin Fengmian in his 20s to you in your 20s, there is a spirit that runs through the academic inheritance of dozens of generations of Gome people, which can not only stick to traditional classics, but also expand on creation and innovation.
We adhere to the principle of "global and local dual-wheel drive, two-way integration of humanities and technology", and stick to the principle of "integration of morality and learning, integration of art and science, integration of ancient and modern times, integration of China and foreign countries". The 2025 Graduation Exhibition is a concentrated display of the achievements of our school's discipline construction and talent training. She said that the China Academy of Art made her feel not only the influence of art, but also the surge of cutting-edge technology. The school embraces cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, spatial computing, and interactive design with an open attitude, giving everyone unlimited freedom of exploration and rich resource support, shaping her faith and courage as a designer. A thousand faces represent my body, and my form changes but my heart remains constant. The fashion show of the School of Fashion Design of the China Academy of Art was launched in "Doppelganger". This fashion show showcased 158 sets of clothing. Inspired by the "72 Transformations", the graduates achieved multiple fissions of identity and deep cohesion of spirit in their creations. These works are either virtual-real symbiotic narratives enabled by digital technology, or contemporary translations of traditional crafts. Every innovation in materials and every clever idea in tailoring are artistic interpretations of "change" and "unchange". When the fantastic imagination of the "72 Transformations" meets the rational thinking of "Doppelganger", the cultural genes of traditional mythology have completed their transformation in contemporary design, giving fashion a vitality that transcends time and space.

"Seventy-two Changes·2025 China Academy of Art Graduation Season" is guided by the Propaganda Department of the CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee and the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture, Radio, Film and Television and Tourism, hosted by China Academy of Art, and undertaken by Zhejiang Art Museum, World Travel Expo, Quan Shanshi Art Center, and various teaching units of China Academy of Art. This graduation season opened simultaneously in seven exhibition areas of China Academy of Art's Xiangshan Campus, Liangzhu Campus, Nanshan Campus, Zhejiang Art Museum, World Travel Expo, Quan Shanshi Art Center and the city's media exhibition area, presenting more than 3,000 graduation works by 2,971 graduates from 20 teaching units, becoming a cross-border, youthful art feast.
Since 2009, China Academy of Art has taken the lead in gathering graduation works of all majors for public display, recommending outstanding talents to the society in the new form of "Graduation Exhibition Week", setting a precedent for art academies. In 2019, this world's largest graduation exhibition carnival broke through the walls of the academy and went to Hangzhou, gathering greater power. The graduation season of China Academy of Art has been constantly self-renewing and iterating, resonating with the times and society. Let the graduation exhibition go out of the campus, forming an art feast that connects all walks of life and spreads throughout the city, creating an urban festival full of youthful atmosphere and creative energy.
In 2025, the theme of the graduation season of China Academy of Art is "72 Changes". "72 Changes" comes from the 72 phenological phenomena, which refers to the Chinese people's worldview and view of nature, the Chinese people's cognition and grasp of natural laws and social order, and the methodology to guide production and life; "phenological phenomena" means "change", "change" means "Tao", and because of change, there is infinity, limitlessness and impermanence; "72 Changes" is possibility, ability value, and attitude; students respond to the world and life with change, constantly define and correct themselves with change, and develop critical and innovative abilities with change as attitude.
The opening ceremony of the 2025 China Academy of Art graduation season is presented on a four-sided surround stage, which responds to the theme of "Seventy-two Transformations" in terms of design. One painting creates the world, and there are countless changes, presenting a high-energy scene of reunion. In the following days, an overall theater full of creativity, warmth and memories is constructed.
