Jin Jun, Director of CAFA Art Museum

Jin Jun, Director of CAFA Art Museum, said in his speech that "Flowing Art Domain - International Art Exchange Research Exhibition of CAFA Art Museum Collection" is the first time that our museum systematically presents rich and precious international art collections. Among them, more than 200 international collections are gathered here, each of which carries unique memories of the times and artistic value, and together outlines the international art profile under the collection system of CAFA Art Museum, vividly reflecting the profound historical achievements accumulated by CAFA in international art education and exchanges. At the same time, this exhibition was selected as the 2025 National Art Museum Collection Exhibition Season Project of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. I hope that the audience will immerse themselves in this artistic dialogue across time, space and region.

Shao Yiyang, Vice Dean of the School of Humanities, Central Academy of Fine Arts

Shao Yiyang, Vice Dean of the School of Humanities at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, said that this exhibition brilliantly presents the precious collections of international masters from Courbet to Marc Quinn at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, spanning classical to contemporary art. The exhibition is curated from the dual perspectives of "China Sees the World" and "The World Sees China", inspiring us to think about the development of art from a global perspective. These exhibits not only show the international exchange process of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, but also reflect the profound impact of collections in different periods on the development of Chinese art. Just like the wisdom of "stones from other mountains can polish jade", international exhibitions allow us to reflect on ourselves through the world and promote artistic progress. This is a successful exhibition with great academic value, and we look forward to more such art feasts in the future.

Hu Xiaolan, Project Manager of the Museum’s Planning and Research Department

Dr. Hu Xiaolan, project director of the museum's planning and research department, as a representative of the curatorial team, said that the attitude of openness, tolerance and acceptance is consistent with the vision and pattern of the Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum in building an international collection system. The planning of this international art exhibition of the collection is inseparable from our origin and fundamental thinking point, that is, the Central Academy of Fine Arts, that is, China. Therefore, the exhibition is divided into two units, "International Art Treasures" and "China Mirror", which unfold from the two-way perspectives of "seeing the world" and "seeing China", trying to present a dynamic picture of the interaction, growth and change of world art from one side. Special thanks to collectors, artists and international friends for their support, allowing these works from all over the world to gather at the Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum. Thanks to the teachers and supporters who have provided help in the implementation of the exhibition. I hope that the exhibition will inspire more academic discussions and revitalize collection research.

This exhibition is the first time in the history of CAFA Art Museum that it systematically sorts out and publicly displays its international art collection. It is an important project for the Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum to continuously explore the value of its collections, expand its academic horizons, promote high-quality utilization of its collections, and promote the high-quality development of the art museum.

The exhibits span three centuries, from 19th century European classical oil paintings to 21st century global contemporary art, covering five continents. These collections not only reflect the artistic characteristics of different eras and regions, but also pay attention to the global art history from a Chinese perspective. This exhibition also records the accumulation of international art collections by the Central Academy of Fine Arts over the past century since the 1930s., including early European oil painting collections, systematic purchases and donations in the 1950s, and further expansion after the new building of the Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum designed by Arata Isozaki was completed and opened in 2008.

The exhibition is divided into two units: "International Art Treasures" and "Mirror of China".

"International Yejin"The museum presents the process of building the collection system with the dual clues of cultural diversity and historical development, and displays many treasures. The exhibits include the first batch of international art collections of modern Chinese public institutions - the first systematic exhibition of the 19th century European classical and realistic oil painting series (such as Gustave Courbet's "Female Head"), as well as the collection of Eastern European prints reflecting the artistic exchanges of a specific period, and contemporary paintings, sculptures, videos and installation works by international art masters acquired during the new museum period, such as Joseph Beuys from Germany, Sean Scully from Ireland, Bjorn Norge from Denmark, José Ventuleri from Chile, Ha Dongche from South Korea, Yoko Ono from Japan, and Roman Signer from Switzerland.

Image

"Mirror Image of China" UnitThe exhibition focuses on the works of four international artists, Chiyoji Yazaki from Japan, Agnès Varda from France, Marc Riboud from France, and Hiroji Kubota from Japan, showing how they observed and artistically presented China's social changes, cultural landscape, and cultural characteristics. These works provide an external perspective to interpret the complex image of China.

Image

The two units, "International Art Treasures" and "Mirror of China", form a two-way observation: they not only display the collection and research of world art (from the inside out), but also present China in the eyes of foreign artists (from the outside in), aiming to explore the flow of art across borders and the significance of cultural exchange and mutual learning.

Image

The exhibition also has a special section that reviews the international art exhibition projects of the Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum since the completion of the new building in 2008. Through the display of books, posters and maps, it explores the profound relationship between Chinese art museums and global art in the new era.

As a project selected for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's boutique exhibition season, the holding of "Flowing Art Field" is not only a phased presentation of the long-term international collection and research work of the Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum, but also reflects the Central Academy of Fine Arts' active participation in international art exchanges and dialogues. At the same time, this exhibition is also an important attempt by the Chinese art museum community. For the first time, it presents an exhibition project that combs the history of world art to the public with its own collection, and also demonstrates the confidence of the art museum in high-quality development.

The exhibition will continue to provide the public with a platform to understand the diversity of world art and cultural exchange practices. With the opening of the exhibition, the Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum will present the three exhibitions of "Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum Collection Display: Ancient Chinese Art", "Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum Collection Exhibition Season: Modern Chinese Art" and "Flowing Art Domain - International Art Exchange Research Exhibition of Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum Collection", contributing to the society from multiple angles the achievements of the Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum's collection of ancient and modern Chinese and foreign art.

The exhibition is on display on the third floor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum and will last until August 24, 2025.
