Chinese calligraphy and painting

This season's Chinese paintings and calligraphy, meticulously selected from around the globe with the help of numerous collectors, feature over 550 exquisite works across three dedicated sales. "Contemplation: A Collection of Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy from Around the World" brings together ancient and modern calligraphy and painting, with several highlights from renowned collections. Fu Baoshi's "Longzhong Discussion," a rare and ingenious work based on a historical figure, is his only such subject, presented at auction for the first time. "Renwu Collection of Paintings," over 20 meters long, is a meticulous collaborative effort by 26 artists, including Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian, Huang Binhong, Pu Xinyu, Yu Fei'an, and Wang Xuetao. Each masterfully crafted piece showcases their unique strengths, embodying a rich tapestry of beauty. Unfolding the scroll is like opening a treasure trove and exploring a treasure trove of jades—a truly magnificent spectacle.

The collection of ancient paintings is led by Shen Zhou's "A Tour of Zhanggong Cave with Introduction," formerly in the collection of Wu Xizhai. This scroll, a travelogue composed of poetry, prose, and painting, was collected and copied by Wu Dacheng in the late Qing Dynasty, and subsequently inscribed by numerous scholars. Later, Wu Hufan mounted Xizhai's copy alongside the original and recorded it in his "Meijing Shuwu Calligraphy and Painting Records," a remarkable achievement.

This season's special collection section also has many special topics, such as Important Private Collections in Southeast Asia, Important Private Collections in Hong Kong, Important Private Collections in North America, Iowa Wind: The Private Collection of the Famous Writer Nie Hualing, Treasures of Good Public Officials, and so on.

This season, we are also presenting two special mini-sessions: "186 Johnston Road: Literary Calligraphy from the Collection of Dr. Li Guoqiang" and "Brocade Curtains and Shadows: Treasures from the Collection of Shen Weijing and Cheng Jinxia." The former, formerly owned by Mr. Li Guoqiang, the former editor-in-chief of Hong Kong's "Wide Angle," will present the largest collection of letters, manuscripts, and calligraphy by Qian Zhongshu and Yang Jiang ever seen on the market. It also includes Wang Yingxia's previously unseen memoirs on Yu Dafu, a highly significant cultural and historical document. The latter represents a significant North American collection. As Ms. Cheng Jinxia was a disciple of Pu Ru, her collection of his works is extensive and exquisite, having previously achieved stellar results at Guardian Auctions Hong Kong. This exhibition showcases the remaining works from the collection, featuring many exquisite and charming works, offering a glimpse into the profound talent and elegance of Mr. Pu's poetry, calligraphy, and painting, a timeless treasure trove.

Fu Baoshi (1904-1965)

Longzhong Strategy

Created in 1946

Framed ink and color on paper

66×40 cm

Source: This item was collected directly from the family of the recipient.

Description:

1. Chronicle of Fu Baoshi, pp. 113-114, Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House, 2004.

2. Collected Papers on Fu Baoshi Research, page 342, Shanghai Painting and Calligraphy Publishing House, 2009.

3. Fu Baoshi’s Art History Manuscript, pp. 306-307, Shandong Fine Arts Publishing House, 2013.

4. Fu Baoshi’s Fine Arts Collection, page 534, Shanghai Painting and Calligraphy Publishing House, 2014.

5. Research on Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, page 43, Guangxi Normal University Press, 2019.

The inscription reads: "Brother Peiqiu." This refers to Luo Shishi (1903-1975), a close friend of Fu Baoshi, courtesy name Peiqiu. A native of Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, he entered Southeast University in Nanjing in 1921. After graduating, he served as secretary of the National Revolutionary Army's General Headquarters. He then went to study in the UK, attending Royal College, Cambridge, where he studied economic theory. Three years later, he returned to China and became a member of the Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the Kuomintang. In 1933, he was appointed Administrative Inspector of the Fourth District of Zhejiang Province. In November 1934, he was appointed Acting Secretary-General of the Jiangsu Provincial Government. In 1939, he served as Director of Chen Guofu's Office, Third Division, in the Secretariat of the Chairman of the National Military Commission. In May 1945, he was appointed an alternate member of the Sixth Central Executive Committee of the Kuomintang. After moving to Taiwan in 1949, he served as an examiner at the Examination Yuan, Director of the Cultural Research Institute of the National Defense Research Institute, and member of the Kuomintang Central Planning Committee.

Fu Baoshi was a voracious reader of ancient books. During his early years as a student, he favored visiting an antique bookstore called "Saoye Shanfang." Its manager was Jiang Runru, whose nephew was Luo Shishi. Through Jiang's introduction, Fu and Luo became friends. They exchanged letters and provided valuable assistance to each other, with Luo Shishi's family even sponsoring Fu Baoshi's teacher training. In August 1931, Fu Baoshi and Luo Shishi traveled from Nanchang to Nanjing. They met Chen Lifu in Jiujiang, where Luo Shishi led them to visit him and persuaded him to assist Fu Baoshi in studying abroad. Luo Shishi later assisted Fu Baoshi in arranging his study abroad. Besides Chen Lifu, he also sought the assistance of Xiong Shihui, then Chairman of the Jiangxi Provincial Government and Minister of Civil Affairs. Xiong Shihui, on two occasions, provided Fu Baoshi with 1,000 yuan in tuition fees for his studies in Japan, on behalf of the Jiangxi Provincial Government. Fu Baoshi once carved a seal for Luo Shishi, and on this painting, Fu wrote a long inscription of nearly 200 words, reflecting the close friendship between the two men.

Note: The proceeds from the auction of this painting will be donated by the client to the Zigen Foundation to promote rural teacher training and sustainable development of education in impoverished areas of China.

Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art

Transcendence: A masterpiece by masters of both the East and the West

This autumn's "Asian 20th Century & Contemporary Art" auction features masterpieces from both Eastern and Western Modern and contemporary art. Titled "Transcendence," the special section presents significant, well-proven works by 16 masters of modern Asian art: Zao Wou-Ki, Chu Teh-Chun, Wu Guanzhong, Lin Fengmian, Ding Yanyong, and Chu Yun-Chih; contemporary pioneers Cai Guo-Qiang and Ding Yi; realist icon Wang Yidong; avant-garde female artists Yayoi Kusama, Xie Jinglan, and Bharti Kher; Japanese Superflat artist Takashi Murakami; leading Southeast Asian contemporary figure Natee Utarit; and Western masters Marc Chagall and Joan Miró. The autumn auction also opens with the spectacular 330-centimeter "Master Riding a Dragon," a monumental work by major Asian sculptor Li Chen, a record-breaking work at auction, a highly anticipated offering.

Cleansing freedom is like observing the illusion of nebulae.

Leading the autumn sale is Zao Wou-Ki's dazzling, ethereal "27.01.83," completed in 1983. From the collection of the Yageo Foundation, the artist boldly divides the painting into two realms: the foreground, layered with subtle hues of yellow, light blue, tender green, and ivory, creates a soft, fluffy effect reminiscent of a sea of clouds. The rhythmic, brown lines stretching across the bottom create a sense of connected mountains reaching the horizon, or the continuous arcs of dust kicked up by a galloping horse. Above, vast expanses of indigo, royal blue, and coffee red propel the space forward into a vast and boundless horizon. Within this, a rich, meticulously crafted texture reveals granular, gravelly specks, scratches, smoky smudges, sprays, dreamy droplets, and imposing thick paint. Set against a shimmering blue-violet hue, the subtle nuances of color create a sense of space and vibrant energy, imbuing the painting with life. Beyond presenting a unique, dreamlike spectacle, the painting connects with the emotions and spirit of contemporary humanity, evoking a sense of witnessing the shifting nebulae and vibrant aurora borealis within the vast sky.

In early 1983, Zao Wou-Ki attended the opening of his solo exhibition at the Taipei Museum of History. During the exhibition, he also visited his close friend, Chang Dai-Chien, for a conversation on art and life. The shimmering blue-violet hues of "27.01.83" may also represent a dialogue and symphony of Zao's appreciation for Chang's splash-ink artistic achievements. Throughout his oeuvre, the vibrant purple hue appears only sparingly, as a finishing touch, rarely appearing extensively. This underscores the rarity and uniqueness of this work. This use of color also echoes the vibrant, shifting colors of Song Dynasty porcelain, such as Jun kiln porcelain, which Zao Wou-Ki admired since his youth. After its creation, this work was exhibited in Zao Wou-Ki's solo exhibition at the prestigious Matisse Gallery in New York in 1986. It was also specially included in the "Zao Wou-Ki Forty Years of Painting 1954-1994" exhibition held at the Center for Contemporary Art in Mexico in 1994, demonstrating the artist and curator's deep love for the work. Its current appearance at auction is a real honor for those who appreciate it!

Sun Yujian, King of Chu

4.8×3.8×56.2 cm

The Chu people rose to prominence between the Jing Mountains and the Han River. Through arduous struggle and dedicated efforts, they eventually grew from a small state "inhabited by the Jing Mountains" into a powerful southern nation boasting "a million soldiers, a thousand chariots, and tens of thousands of cavalry," earning them one of the "Five Hegemons of the Spring and Autumn Period" and the "Seven Hegemons of the Warring States Period." They commanded troops from the Zhou suburbs, sought control of the Central Plains, and fought fierce battles with the Song and Jin dynasties, expanding their territory. Martial values were fundamental to the Chu state. Leveraging their exceptional bronze casting skills, the Chu people forged countless formidable weapons. This autumn, China Guardian Auctions presents the Chu Wangsun Yu Sword and Chu Wangsun Yu Ji, both symbols of the Chu army's might. Qu Yuan's words in "Nine Cantos: Crossing the River," "With my long spear as dazzling as a chariot, my crown as majestic as a cloud-cutting halberd," perfectly capture this majestic military prowess and spirit. These weapons not only marked the rise of the Chu state but also serve as a tangible testament to its glorious history.

Early Qing Dynasty

Huanghuali mortise and tenon single-panel table with phoenix-head and dragon-shaped patterns

220×43.5×87 cm

Provenance: Collection of Dongtai Trading Company.

Cases often feature cloud motifs and dragon motifs, while phoenix motifs are extremely rare. This case is made of huanghuali wood, with a single-board top and a dragon motif on the legs, clearly symbolizing the auspiciousness of dragons and phoenixes.

According to Mr. Tan Xiangdong's research, "As a totem that appeared in ancient times, the phoenix has a high status and is widely used in the history of ancient Chinese arts and crafts. Phoenix patterns are also used in wooden furniture, but they are far less common than various dragon patterns. The carving of a perfect phoenix pattern requires a sufficient area, so it often appears on furniture such as cabinet doors, bed rails, and mirror tables. The use of phoenix patterns on desks is mostly used as carvings on the side panels between the legs. For example, the table with a raised head formerly in the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Arts and Crafts is used on the top of the clothes hanger, and only the phoenix head is carved." This further demonstrates the rarity of phoenix-patterned desks.

Green Strange Knots in Nha Trang, Vietnam

296 grams

Provenance: From an important private collection in Hong Kong.

This piece, a unique green knot, is not a backflow agarwood, and is authentic Nha Trang. It has a clean aroma, a soft and glutinous texture, and a thin, distinct oil line. Rich oil is visible at the opening of the fragrance. The surface grooves left by the incense hook are casual yet beautiful, enhancing its ornamental value. Weighing over 290 grams, its longevity as a fine incense material is self-evident. With Vietnamese agarwood nearly extinct today, this piece is quite rare.

Vietnamese Green Agarwood offers a refreshing coolness and a sweet, rich aroma. Its scent stimulates salivation and regulates qi, leaving the mind relaxed and refreshed. The powdered agarwood leaves a strong numbing sensation on the tongue. Raw agarwood has a more intense and diffuse aroma than mature agarwood, offering a richer and more varied flavor profile.
