16 Jan 2026, 14:30

Pace Gallery's flagship New York space will soon present "Delayed Gravity," a new solo exhibition by Chinese artist Wang Guangle, featuring ten new paintings. Wang Guangle constructs his paintings through layering and slow deposition, transforming time, color, and gravity into a perceptible visual language. The works unfold between tranquility and tension, guiding viewers into his meditative creative world. The exhibition will run from January 16 to February 28, with an opening reception on January 15 from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Wang Guangle has long been interested in the relationship between painting and time and process. In this new work, he changed the canvas from horizontal to vertical, with colors accumulating from top to bottom, enhancing the sense of gravity and fading in the work. The thick, transparent, and slowly sinking layers of color make the painting seem to extend on the wall, while also visually presenting an inward-contracting spatial tension, creating an almost sculptural viewing experience.

In addition to his paintings, Wang Guangle will also present sculptural installations. One Layer a DayThis work involves the artist adding paint to water daily during the exhibition and allowing it to freeze, then stacking these ice plates layer by layer to gradually form an installation. This serves as a continuation of the artist's ongoing focus on transience, performativity, architecture, and participatory art practices. The installation echoes the exhibited paintings, both pointing to the artist's long-term reflections on color, time, and the generative process.

Wang Guangle

Born in Fujian Province, China in 1976

Wang Guangle was born in Fujian in 1976 and graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2000. He currently lives and works in Beijing. "Temporality" has always been a theme he explores in his artistic practice. Through a series of works, he captures the philosophical layers and the inherent texture of time itself. In the painting process, by layering paint on the canvas, he not only freezes the passage of time but also transforms time into a pure, meditative language.

Wang Guangle's works have been exhibited at the California Asia Pacific Triennial (2013), the Busan Biennale (2010), and the 4th Prague Biennale (2009). His solo exhibitions have been held at the Beijing Commune, Pace Hill, the West Annamite Society, and Pace New York, among others. Group exhibitions he has participated in have been held at institutions such as the Nanjing Golden Eagle Art Museum, Shanghai Jingwei Art Center, Beijing Song Art Museum, National Art Museum of China, Dongfang Art Museum, Shanghai Fosun Art Center, the Lowell Family Private Collection Museum Miami, the White Rabbit Art Museum Australia, the Ludwig Museum in Germany, the Boijmans van Bonningen Museum in Rotterdam, Netherlands, the Bolzano Bozen Museum in Italy, the Old Gold Asian Art Museum in the United States, the Long Museum in Shanghai, the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, Taikang Space in Beijing, and the CAFA Art Museum, among others.
