[2025 Autumn Auction] Sotheby's London David Hockney iPad Painting Sale: The Arrival of Spring Receives High Sales, 100% Sold
At 18:30 on October 17, 2025, Sotheby's "David Hockney Sale: The Arrival of Spring" was held as scheduled in London.The 17 lots in this auction, all iPad paintings, achieved a total transaction amount of £6.2103 million, with a total transaction rate of 100%, of which 100% of the lots were sold above the estimated price.David Hockney's "The Arrival of Spring at Woldgate, East Yorkshire (Twenty Eleven) - February 19, 2011" was sold for £762,000, becoming the top seller of the auction.
The core work of this special exhibition originates from a unique creation by David Hockney. In the summer of 2011, Hockney recalled planning to record the spring, but had no idea that he would use an iPad, a relatively new medium at the time.
Initially, Hockney wanted to depict the changing seasons of spring day by day, but working outdoors on an easel in winter proved difficult. In early January, after completing "four or five" iPad drawings at Walgate, he realized, "We could depict entire rooms this way. The iPad is perfectly suited to this." From January to June, Hockney completed 94 iPad drawings, narrowing down the 51 to form "The Arrival of Spring at Walgate, East Yorkshire, 2011 (2011)." Early the following year, the series was exhibited in the Royal Academy's grandest gallery.
This auction features 17 of these 51 works, many of which are masterpieces. These works reflect Hockney's observations and perceptions of spring, and are the result of the integration of technology and art.
