About the artist

Fan Yangzong (b. 1982) was born in Hsinchu, Taiwan, and graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts Creation at the National Taipei University of the Arts. He lives and works in Taiwan. Fan Yangzong is known for using tape to create sharp edges on his canvases. His famous "Pool Series" cleverly conceals various desires. By the open yet private public swimming pool, he observes people being spied on, and even voyeuristically, from a strange and unconventional perspective, using goggles to reflect light, obstructions, and other means. He also depicts glistening water droplets evaporating on hot, red necks, and uses the calmness on the water's surface to contrast with the surreal and fantastical elements beneath. Even the undulating foliage seems to reflect the artist's surging emotions. A slightly aggressive desire churns intensely within the seemingly peaceful canvas.
